There are plenty of stories about people eloping with their dogs in Colorado and having them "sign" the marriage license with a paw print. But did you know you can do the same with your cat?
It's not recommended if your cat isn't at least somewhat used to the outdoors, but it is absolutely possible. If they're cooperative, you can even have their paw print on your marriage license- UNLESS you got your license from Denver, El Paso, or Arapahoe Counties- they don't allow paw prints of any kind.
The easiest way to incorporate a feline friend is having them be part of the getting ready photos at your house or rental. But if you want to bring them along for the whole adventure, there are a few things to know.
So how do we bring our cat along?
The most important thing you can do is have a plan to keep them safe, happy, and healthy.
To keep your elopement from turning into a wild cat chase across the mountains, the best option is to get a cat backpack that has either a mesh or clear plastic window with air holes so your cat is visible and still gets to experience the outdoors a little bit! The second option, if your cat is used to it and you know they'll behave, is a harness and leash. Unless your cat is an adventure cat that hikes with you regularly, the backpack will be essential to ensure both their comfort and yours. Holding a cat for photos is adorable. Carrying a cat four miles round trip because they don't know how to walk on a leash is not. I do recommend still using a harness and leash even with the backpack if you want to take them out for photos so they don't escape, but you know your cat best. Personally, I know three of my family's four cats would be fine with the backpack and harness and completely chill for the photos. The last one is a menace and I'm convinced he is Harry Houdini reincarnated. I would not bring him along for a hiking elopement if you paid me.
Once you have a way to make sure they're safe, you have to make sure they're going to be comfortable the whole time. If it's eighty degrees and you're doing a six mile round trip hike in the sun, that may not be the best environment for a cat. Luckily it tends to be cooler in the mountains all year round so as long as they're not going to overheat in the backpack that's up to you. Along with that, make sure you bring enough water for them. Even if they're riding in a backpack the whole way, they will need to stay hydrated just as much as you! Bringing treats is also a good idea, to reward them and to get them to look at the camera in the photos.
If you want your cat to be a part of the ceremony but don't want them to come along for the whole ride, we can always do pictures with them first and then either you can have a friend or family member come pick them up and take them home or they can chill in your AIR CONDITIONED camper. Leaving any pet in a hot car is a terrible thing to do and I will not allow it. Even though it can be chilly at high altitude the sun is still extremely powerful and will heat up a car like an oven.
DO NOT bring your cat unless they are going to be safe, comfortable, and taken care of.
